What is Grass Fed?

We have all heard of the virtues of Alberta beef, but why demand the grass fed and grass finished beef?

We grass feed and finish our animals as a commitment to your health and eating experience, as well as sustainability of our ecosystems.

  • Our cattle are grazing on pasture from birth to the time they are butchered, creating full-flavour, local meat that reflects the diverse and rich grasslands of Alberta.
  • Grass-fed and grass-finished beef contributes to a diet rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and a healthy ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Our grazing practices are designed to build on the soils, and contribute to the ecology and ecosystems. Using rotational and intensive grazing techniques we look to mimic the bison that so deeply defined the soils and ecology of our area.

The Redtail Difference

We invite you to taste the Redtail difference. From pasture to plate, all Redtail beef is grass-fed and grass-finished. Our Alberta grass-fed beef is hormone & antibiotic free, and butchered at 16-18 months for the tenderest, most full-flavour eating experience possible.

Our herd is predominantly Scottish Luing, a hardy breed that is naturally well suited to harsh, prairie winters. These adaptations are exhibited in their innate ability to forage and convert grass to fat, creating succulent, marbled, and full-flavour meat. In other words, the perfect grass-fed beef for any Albertan.

Redtail Farm raises cattle on a rotational grazing system, which allow these creatures to express their natural ruminant tendencies of grazing. They are provided with a variety of perennial pasture to build on soils and contribute to natural life cycles. These sustainable methods directly translate to the nutrient density of your beef.

How to Order Grass Fed Beef

We recognize that this is not your everyday grocery store ordering experience, so let us help you by breaking it down a bit.

All Redtail grass fed and finished beef is seasonal, to ensure that we are butchering at the optimal time. Orders are accepted year round but we don’t butcher until Sept/Oct (beef) and Nov/Dec (pork). Our beef is dry aged and all our local meat is processed in a provincially inspected facility.

We sell quarter, half, and whole beef, not individual cuts. Shop our selection today.

But what does this look like?

If you’re ordering a whole beef the cuts are really open to your choosing, as the animal is all yours. The only requirement here is that you are prepared with a deep freezer ready to store this entire delicious product!

Ordering anything from a half to an eighth is great for anyone who has less space or is just looking to sample some of our product. You are sharing the animal with others though, so getting only specific cuts is not an option.

A one-quarter cut generally includes:

  • 1 Blade Roast (4 lbs)
  • 1 Sirloin Tip Roast
  • 1 Inside Round Roast
  • 1 Outside Round Roast
  • 1 Inch Steaks / 2 per package (4 lbs)
    • 6 T-bones
    • 6 Rib Steak
    • 6 Sirlion
  • 1 Package of Short Ribs
  • 4 Packages/1.5lbs of Boneless Stew Meat
  • 15-20 Packages/1.5lbs of Ground Beef

For a half cow order, roughly double these amounts. For an eighth of a cow, you’d receive a smaller selection of some cuts to equal 44 lbs.
